With reference to your letter No. 3964/24 of the 30th ultimo relative to the case of Mr.F.J.Brooke, late of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, I am àirected by Mr. Secretary Ramsay MacDonald to state, for the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, that this department cannot accept the cost of repatriating British subjects to this country when such repatriation is undertaken by officers not in the service of this department and that as the Hongkong authorities decided to repatriate Brooke, it is considered that the Hongkong Government should bear
